“The magician’s friends” is a circus and theatre show inspired by Isaac Bashevis Singer’s prose. It is half-joking and half-serious, similar to the Nobel Prize winner’s style of writing. The circus convention is used to spin a literary tale about the protagonists of Singer’s short stories and tell a story about the world that suddenly and irrevocably disappeared as a result of The Great Tragedy.  Yet, human weaknesses, dilemmas, joys, and hopes have remained the same.

The music chosen to illustrate the show is not accidental. Lou Reed, Amy Winehouse, Ramones, Leonard Cohen, Lenny Kravitz, and Bob Dylan are musicians who have been inspired by the Jewish heritage or rebelled against it while aware of their roots. These musicians, Yasha Mazur, and the show’s performers are all magicians, with all the ups and downs that come with the profession.

The spectacle is an integral part of the itinerant festival “Following I.B. Singer’s traces”, organised for the 11th time by the “Grodzka Gate – NN Theatre” Centre in Lublin in cooperation with the Lublin-based organisation Sztukmistrze Foundation. Aside from Lublin, the show will also be played in Kraśnik, Janów Lubelski, Kock, Lubartów, Bychawa, Piaski, Łeczna, Krasnobród, Szczebrzeszyn, Józefów, Goraj and Biłgoraj.

Directed by Arkadiusz Ziętek and the team.
