Anniversary Circus Poster Contest
Workshops of Culture in Lublin are announcing a contest for designing a circus poster to mark the 10th anniversary of Carnaval Sztukmistrzów. The aim of the contest is to select a poster that would become the artistic representation of the event.
The contest is open to artists, designers, graphic designers, students of arts, architecture as well as visual arts, projects teams of advertising agencies and graphic design studios.
Carnaval Sztukmistrzów is a time of shows fusing theatre and new circus. Artists and circus art masters from all over Europe come to Lublin to perform breathtaking, magical shows. It is the most performatively diverse festival in the country. Only at Carnaval in Lublin can you see the best of contemporary circus arts, clowning, acrobatics and busking from all over the world. Carnaval’s integral element is Urban Highline Festival – the oldest and the largest highline festival in the world. The highline festival fuses elements of the city’s identity- The Magician of Lublin eith the emerging sports discipline – slacklining.
In the history of the Polish School of Posters, circus posters hold a special place. In the 1960s, Zjednoczone Przedsiębiorstwa Cyrkowe (ZPR) commissioned circus themed posters from acclaimed Polish artists. They were not literal illustrations of the circus, nor did they advertise specific shows. The artists reached for metaphor and symbol to creatively render the atmosphere of the circus. The Polish circus posters offered a surprising variety of colours, rich forms and creative solutions, showing the artistry of creators that included leading Polish poster artists. By reaching for this tradition, we want to inspire artists and graphic designers to once again take up circus topics. Contemporary new circus is still a presentation of incredible skills, and predominantly human, without animals. New Circus is most of all a tale, still offering fun and humour but also stories about important topics told with an artistic flair.
The task is to prepare a project of a poster taking up new circus topics. The project must include the mention Carnaval Sztukmistrzów 10 years. The winning piece will be printed in a limited number of copies and given to people and institutions who contributed with merit to the development of the festival. Selected pieces will also be put on display at the post-contest exhibition during the 10th edition of the festival, taking place between 25-28 July 2019 in Lublin.
The works will be evaluated by a jury consisting of the festival’s organisers and representatives of academic and artistic circles.
